Who we are

Human Recognition Systems, or HRS to our friends, is one of the earliest pioneers of applying biometric technology to the challenges of identity. Over the course of our evolution, our technology has helped to deliver some of the most challenging “identity” problems, from ensuring the right patients receive the right medicines to helping rebel soldiers re-integrate with society.

What we do

Today, we develop a series of industrial software and hardware systems, enabled through biometric technology, that help Construction companies, Airports, Oil & Gas facilities and other “Critical Safe Secure” environments operate effectively. In other words, we help build buildings, send people on holiday and put fuel in your car, all the while keeping everyone safe and secure.

Oh, and we helped build the Olympics 2012... have we mentioned that?

Geoffrey Maddrell

Geoffrey Maddrell Chairman

After service in the Parachute Regiment, a law degree and MBA at Cambridge and Columbia Universities respectively, Geoffrey spent his early career based in Switzerland and Brussels with Shell and subsequently Bowater as their Chief Executive for Europe. Geoffrey then became Chief Executive of the Tootal Group at a time of significant change, as the Group was converted from a labour intensive business with 12,000 employees into an internationally competitive multinational group with leadership in the UK, US and growing Asian markets.

Geoffrey has since been the Chairman of numerous businesses undergoing strategic change. This has included Westbury, which was grown from a regional to a national house builder; Glenmorangie, where an internationally powerful brand was created; LDV who were saved from the bankruptcy of Leyland DAF prior to being sold; and the UNITE Group, which is now the UK leader in student accommodation.

Geoffrey has had two periods as a Civil Service Commissioner and set up a number of charities, including Research Autism, which he also chairs.

Neil Norman CEO & Founder

In 2001 Neil founded Human Recognition Systems with a clear vision to establish a company that continually innovates, is a vibrant place to work and is the clear market leader in the provision of enterprise-class Identity Assured Management (I AM) products. In February 2014, Neil was re-appointed as CEO.

Prior to establishing Human Recognition Systems, Neil spent 7 years at global management consultancy Accenture taking on several senior roles in a number of key sectors, with special focus on technology strategy.

A mathematician at heart and well-respected thought-leader in the advanced identification space, Neil is an original Committee member of the Intellect Association for Biometrics and a 2-time winner of the IOD Young NW Director of the Year Award.

Simon Meyer Operations Director

Simon is responsible for the day-to-day operations of HRS including project delivery, finance and on-going customer support, ensuring satisfied customers for each and every project. He led the successful ISO 9001 quality accreditation and ensured the operations kept pace with the significant growth of the company.

Previously Simon was responsible for the development and growth of MSite the UK market leader in cloud-based, biometric construction site management and access control. Under Simon, the Construction business unit successfully delivered large scale projects at the Olympic Park and London Bridge, and continues to develop framework agreements with prime contractors including Lend Lease, Shepherd and Carillion.

Simon joined Human Recognition Systems in 2004 from Accenture, where Simon developed extensive project management, business process engineering and delivery experience over a number of large and challenging IT transformation projects for various UK and European companies including Tesco, BP and BHS.

Jim Slevin Associate Director

Jim is responsible for generating strategic partnerships for delivering HRS products on an international basis and provides strategic direction for HRS in the Aviation and Transport sector.

Previously Jim was Aviation Managing Director at HRS and since joining HRS Jim has focused on delivery of Aviation related products to clients at a number of UK Airports including London Gatwick, Manchester, London City, London Luton, Newcastle, Edinburgh, Bristol, Belfast International and Liverpool John Lennon.

Jim Slevin brings extensive experience to the board having spent more than twenty years working within the aviation sector in a range of technical and management roles, including as Group Security Risk and Identity Manager at the largest UK airports operator group, BAA. At BAA Jim led and managed numerous technology and change management projects including Security Risk Management, Identity Management, Core Aviation Security Technologies and Core Operational Strategy and Change Management.

First company in the world to revolutionise the airport ID Pass application process with an online system

For the first time, pass holders at Gatwick Airport are able to dispense with their old, repetitive, paper-based pass applications and use MTrust to manage employee information and submit electronic pass applications.


World first deployment of face recognition to measure the passenger journey in an airport

In June 2011, Gatwick Airport went live with MFlow to measure the passenger journey through the terminal using facial recognition.


First deployment of iris-at-distance technology to enrol and identify passengers in a UK airport

In June 2011, Gatwick Airport went live with MFlow to enrol and identify passengers using iris-at-distance technology to automate common departure lounge access and domestic boarding. The technology had previously not been used in the public domain in the UK or integrated with automatic gates anywhere in the world.

First to integrate CSCS smart cards for site access

These days, everyone on construction sites needs a CSCS card. Se we thought we'd make the world a little bit simpler by allowing that card to be used to get through site access points, using MSite.

Working with the Department of Health, we deployed iris and fingerprint recognition at healthcare facilities within 65 UK prisons.


First to deploy biometrics at a UK airport

We deployed biometric access systems for 19,000 airport workers in all three of Manchester Airport's terminals.


First UK company to import and deploy hand geometry recognition technology

Long before today's export channels were established, we were importing this new and exciting technology directly from around the world to bring the benefits to our UK customers.
